North Carolina For The People supports fair, secure elections and every eligible voter’s freedom to participate without fear or intimidation. Both are essential to a healthy democracy.
Federal prosecutors have announced indictments against ten people in North Carolina involving alleged false claims of U.S. citizenship and improper voting. These allegations deserve careful investigation and a fair legal process. An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
These cases also require context. North Carolinians cast approximately 5.7 million ballots in the 2024 general election. Ten indictments do not, on their own, establish widespread fraud or demonstrate that election results were unreliable. Meanwhile, more than 2 million registered North Carolinians did not cast a ballot. That participation gap does not include eligible residents who were unregistered. Bringing more eligible voters into the democratic process must remain a priority.
Responsible election administration requires officials to investigate credible allegations, address confirmed problems, and explain their findings to the public. It also requires accuracy, transparency, and respect for due process. Public confidence grows when officials communicate what the evidence establishes and acknowledge what remains unproven.
There is a difference between investigating individual allegations and using them to cast unsupported doubt on an entire election. Public officials have a responsibility to communicate the scope of these cases accurately. Allegations must never become a justification for intimidating eligible voters, stigmatizing communities, or rejecting election results without evidence.
As early voting begins, North Carolinians deserve clear information and practical support. Election professionals, legal advocates, and community organizations across our state are working to help eligible voters understand the process and address barriers to participation.
Our message is clear: If you are eligible to vote, you have the right to cast your ballot. North Carolina For The People remains committed to protecting that right and helping voters participate with confidence.
Early voting continues through 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. Voters may cast their ballots at any early voting site in their county. Visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections website for locations and schedules.
